The first thing you have to understand is that I never touched him. I only screamed.
I felt it start in my sternum. It moves up through my throat like something trying to be born. My vision does this thing where the edges go soft and bright at the same time, and every sound in the hallway collapses into a single frequency, one long silver wire pulled taut behind my eyes.
I don't remember deciding to. Kids say the lockers rattled. Somebody's phone screen cracked. I didn't do that on purpose either. I don't know how to do anything on purpose yet. That's sort of the whole point of this story.
My mother said, very quietly, the way you'd say something you'd been dreading saying for seventeen years: "What did you do, Dot?"
