The Nook Between Maps

Josie Falk

A torn page from her grandfather's atlas folds itself into a paper crane one night, and Mira follows it into a hidden valley where lost geography drifts and settles. The Nook is shrinking, because the modern world doesn't lose anything anymore. Only one thing can save it: the last hand-drawn map still being made.

"Show me the mistake page," Mira said. She always asked this. It was a game between them, though Grandfather pretended each time to consider whether he ought to.

"There is no mistake page."

"There's a mistake on a page. The one with the mountain that isn't there." … "Where did it go? The mountain that wasn't there?" … "Nowhere, Mira. It never existed." … "But it's drawn. Somebody drew it like it was real. That has to go somewhere." … That was an ordinary evening, one of hundreds, and Mira would not have remembered it specially at all if it hadn't been the last ordinary one for a while. Somewhere below her, in the dark study, a page that had held still for longer than her grandfather had been alive was beginning, very quietly, to work itself loose.
